Shawn knew early on in life that he had a gift and love for music and songwriting. When he surrendered his life to Christ at age 18, he knew that he was called to use his musical gifting for the glory of God. He quickly jumped into ministry and spent years volunteering as well as being on staff as a worship leader. In 2004, he moved to Florida to help close friend Renaut Van der Riet plant Mosaic Church. Shortly after the move, his life was threatened by a brain tumor that drove him into a deep intimacy with Christ and sparked an urgency to share the gospel through his music. In 2007, he was ordained as a pastor and accepted full responsibility for the spiritual leadership of the worship team. Kicking into full gear, Shawn began training and investing in up-and-coming worship leaders. During this time, he was also inspired to write several worship songs with the hope of releasing them into the global arena. In late 2008 he met up with friend Conrad Johnson (Chris and Conrad) to record "Not Ashamed" and walked out of the studio with the drive to record a full-length album. In April of 2009, Shawn attended GMA week and was selected to perform "Not Ashamed" in Tom Jackson's stage performance workshop. He was cheered on by the audience and received great feedback from industry leaders. It was in that moment that Shawn felt God's approval on sharing his music with the world. He returned home and received full support from his church to move forward in the studio recording his songs. He is currently working on his full-length album with plans to be released in early 2010. He is very excited for his first radio single "You Are the Reason" which has been released for Christmas 2009.
Inspiration behind "You are the Reason"
I can't help but notice that the atmosphere seems to change at Christmas time. There's joy in the air, people are giving gifts, friends and families are together, the nativity scenes are dusted off and displayed. We are excited to celebrate Jesus' birth! Then the pine needles fall off the Christmas tree, the Christmas spirit has faded away, and life can return to the mundane at full speed. I was inspired to write "You are the Reason" to remind us that we celebrate Christmas for the same reason we celebrate Jesus all year long... God is with us. Before God made the world, He planned to fully reveal Himself to us so that we would know His love. Before Christ, we knew God in part, and now through Jesus we know His mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. Jesus told us "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and you come to the Father through Me." No matter the season or what we are going though in life, He is always the answer for us. He is our hope at any time of the year, even when our skies turn gray. He never changes, His love for us remains the same, and He is always with us.
